Nylon Glass 3D Printer Filament is Filamatrix’s glass fiber-filled nylon, which boasts some of the highest physical properties available in the industry. Impact strength is where Nylon Glass really stands out, while still maintaining very high stiffness, tensile strength, and heat deflection temperature (HDT). Glass-filled nylon filament is similar to Nylon Carbon Fiber in many high strength, high stiffness applications, but also works very well in parts that will experience repeated shock due to its higher impact strength.
Glass is an abrasive material, so as the filament is extruded those abrasive fibers will start to wear the nozzle. This will quickly become apparent with a regular nozzle as the quality of the print becomes worse. As the nozzle wears from the inside, the inner diameter will become rough and increase in size, and the tip of the nozzle will also be worn flat as it moves across the printed object. While our testing has shown a significant reduction in nozzle wear with our Nylon Glass Fiber, it will still rapidly wear out a brass nozzle. Hardened nozzles are highly recommended for this filament.
Nylon materials inherently take up moisture from the surrounding atmosphere due to the nature of their chemistry. When most polymers are extruded with high moisture content, the chains in the polymer will break. When this happens, you may notice a change in viscosity and melt strength of the melted polymer. An obvious sign of your nylon being too wet is popping noises as the material is extruded, as this is the moisture in the material vaporizing. All nylon materials are shipped in vacuum-sealed bags to prevent moisture uptake during shipping and storage.
